Virat Kohli has almost owned every second batting record in the history of the sport. The talismanic batter will be staring at breaching yet another benchmark when his team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), takes on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opening match of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 22.
Kohli is on the verge of breaking statemate Shikhar Dhawan’s record against the Chennai Super Kings. The former RCB captain needs 73 more runs to eclipse Dhawan’s tally of 1057 runs against the Chennai Super Kings. Kohli has so far scored 985 runs against CSK in the glitzy T20 tournament.
While records are meant to be broken, Kohli would also be keen to set right a couple of numbers that aren’t looking great for him. In the powerplay, especially against spinners, Kohli has only been able to score just 15 runs in 23 balls and has also been guilty of being dismissed twice for low scores in the first six overs.
The 35-year-old hasn’t had the best of outings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, especially under lights. In 12 IPL innings at Chepauk, Kohli has scored 362 runs at an ordinary average of 30.16.
He has also scored only two half-centuries, with his latest coming way back in 2013 against the Chennai Super Kings. In the IPL, Kohli’s last appearance at Chepauk was in 2021, when he scored just five runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Not just Kohli, RCB would also be keen to set their record straight against five-time IPL winners CSK. In the 31 matches the teams have met so far in the league, CSK has the upper hand with 20 wins, while RCB has only won half of what Chennai has managed to win. One match between the teams was a washout, ending in a no result.
